Formatting Options with WebAG Automat

The formatting options of WebAG Automat provide you with a simple and convenient way to create attractive web pages via the browser, without any knowledge of HTML. In the simplest case you need to do no more than select the initial word and the final word and then assign the relevant formatting. The required format tags can be assigned by an administrator. The software package includes a selection of the most common formatting devices that can also be found in word processors and HTML editors.

Enterprise WebAG provides specially customized training seminars on the Online Authoring Tool of System WegAG Automat. Moreover, we have gathered a large amount of know-how on designing pages produced with the Authoring System. We would be very happy to advise!

How to Call up Formatting

All the components of a page or template page can be accessed from the edit view in the Authoring System via the Format link and then formatted any way you like.

Illustration 1 – Calling up formatting

The Format Editor is very simple to use and can be set to display formatted content as it will appear on the web page.

Structure of the Editor

The Format Editor displays the relevant paragraph with any formatting that has already been applied. Depending on the display mode (simple or enhanced – set under User Options), you can view images, hyperlinks and text formatting exactly as they appear in page preview.

Illustration 2 – Format Editor

Formatting is displayed in the text by means of POSITION CODEs – {#n} – to mark the beginning and end of a hyperlink or of text formatting or the position of an image or of a text marker.

POSITION CODEs can be selected for the editing of the formatting. When you do so, their colour changes to {#n}.

The sequential numbering of the POSITION CODEs is controlled by the system.

Note on the Use of POSITION CODEs

POSITION CODEs are displayed by the Editor as text in each paragraph, where they can then be moved around any way you like. However, you cannot delete or insert them manually.

Further Examples of Page Formatting

Formatting a Table

Our example shows the formatting of a table of sales figures, copied from Excel to the Table Editor of WebAG Automat via the Clipboard.

Illustration 5 – Unformatted table in the Editor

This table is displayed with text layout in the browser by the Automat table formatting function, as follows:

Further formatting can be achieved via the Format Editor

First, format the text of an entire row in a smaller font. Create a new text format and select the 2nd row as shown in the example. All subsequent text formats will relate to the entire row.

Next, format the header of the table in bold. In our example, this should be the company name “Virtuell-AG”, which extends across two rows.

Illustration 8 – Formatting a row in a table

We want to display “Virtuell-AG” bigger and in blue, as cell content, and negative figures in red. To do so, we create different text formats for each cell content, limiting the formatting in each case by means of a start and end word.

The finished formatted sales table should look as follows:

Lists

To design your own navigation pages with links to documents in a folder structure, we would recommend creating paragraphs of the list type and to implement each item as a hyperlink.

Illustration 11 – Unformatted list

When marking words in a list, it is important that the final word should be in the same line as the first word. It is not possible to have markings extending across several list items.

By marking the list items Vortrag DOAG (DOAG Talk) or Automat 4.1, it is possible to assign links to them from the document folder hierarchy.

Illustration 12 – Linking a list

In addition, you can specify the target (window name) in which the link is to be opened and whether to go to a text marker (anchor).

This makes it possible to create a customized table of contents in cases where insufficient options are provided by the sitemap and by automatically created folders.

Link management and authorization assignment ensure that links are only provided if the relevant site and authorization are actually available.

Templates

Templates are formatted in the Template Editor, described elsewhere. It has now been expanded to include a Format mode that toggles between the editing icons ¶… and …¶ for calling up either the Editor or the Format Editor.

Depending on the mode, these icons allow either the editing or formatting of all paragraphs available in a template.

Create Your Own Format Tags (Administrators Only)

For administrators, the Web Design menu in the System folder has been extended to include the item Format Tags.

Each format tag must have an English and German name as well as a piece of HTML code with instructions for opening and closing the tag.

Standard Format Tags

The basic installation of WebAG Automat 4.1 provides a series of standard tags for the formatting of text and paragraphs. These tags can be edited, deleted and expanded as and when required.

Format tags can be arranged in any order, for instance to group together individual tags.

Caution:
When a format tag is deleted, it is automatically removed from the paragraph in which it occurred.
Changes to format tags take immediate effect on the paragraphs in which they are used.
